https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enabling_Act_of_1933#Hitler.27s_speech_before_the_passing_of_the_Enabling_Act

Read Hitler's speech before the law eliminating democracy was passed, with a majority vote (because the Nazi Party had a majority government in the Reichstag at the time). They were absolutely, certifiably, 100% targeting Jews specifically. The "Final Solution" just caught up the other groups as collateral damage/out of control totalitarianism/Aryanism. Oh, and their Eugenics Program being started on the disabled first was only done so as a testbed, to iron out the problems. (i.e., how to make the trains run on time) In fact, the initial Eugenics Program against PWD was emulated by most of North America, up until WW2.

I agree that the Nazis were targeting the Jews specifically, and maybe even centrally. Again as I day the Nazis were profoundly antisemitic and it would be ludicrous to deny that. but I don't agree that they were targeting them solely and that everyone else was merely caught up by accident. To attribute it to out of control totalitarianism seems to me to be the point, in a way. Like, I mean, yeah, it was something they did because of their system of government and their ideals. That doesn't make it an accident.

"maybe even centrally"

What a brave concession to make.

AYRT

Nowhere did I say it was "an accident" that the Nazis started on PWD at first, and progressed to other races (Roma, etc.) when they started running out of Jewish people. The main thrust of the ideology behind the Third Reich was to bring about the Biblical End Times.

The fact that the Eugenics Programs were a trial run for what they eventually did is NOT an accident, and is part of the horror of the genocide, absolutely. But, in the Nazi worldview, it WAS collateral damage for them to kill non-Jews, even non-Aryan non-Jews, because they were trying to "purify mankind" to "go back to the Garden [of Eden]." This was after the Catholics had already spent the better part of two millennia convincing white Europeans "return to the Garden" meant "White people. White people everywhere."

Okay no I'm sorry but that's at best a total misreading of Nazi ideology and at worse just crazy and wrong

It's also just such a completely insane reading of Christianity in general and Catholicism specifically that I'm honestly not sure where to start

(Anonymous) 2015-01-01 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
...so, are you the Catholic apologist further along in the thread? Because I never "read in" anything to Hitler's speech. He was referring specifically to Catholics (as the master denomination -- he even references "the [Catholic] See"!!) and to Jews. That's pretty much a stated historical fact, not an "insane reading of Christianity." (Hint: There are more Christian denominations in the world than just the Catholics, BTW. Though I realize you guys don't think so.)

(Anonymous) 2015-01-01 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
Nah tho

You're the one who referred to catholics when they meant to refer to all Christians where I made a clear distinction

You're also the one who is simultaneously taking one speech by Hitler and treating it as the keystone of the whole Nazi and fascist ideologies, misinterpreting it, and also just completely making some shit up about Christianity

Please stop being ridiculous tia

Just a point, but America wasn't emulating the Nazis. It was the other way around.

Eugenics gained a heck of a lot of ground in the US, and some programs continued up until this century ("voluntary" sterilisation of prisoners). Hitler admired the states that had the most widespread eugenics programs, and took inspiration from them with regards to his treatment of the mentally disabled.

That might be true, but I feel claiming that all of the Holocaust was just about anti-Semitism does a disservice to all the other demographics that were targeted. It wasn't just collateral; they were still specifically targeting those groups, even if it wasn't the initial goal of the Nazis.
