It's cute when you are little kid. But back when I was a librarian, I had a mother come up to me looking for that book for her sick son who needed to read it for class. I pointed out that the book was in the adult section. To which she answered without missing a beat, "But it has talking animals. Shouldn't it be in the children's section?" I told her no that it was indeed a book aimed for adults but she gave me this look that screamed, "LIAR!!!!!" I will never forget that look.

DA - Isn't it pretty well known for being a communism metaphor, though?

... then again, given some people I know would probably have no clue either.

I did try to tell her that. How the book was a metaphor for the fall of the Tsars and the rise and corruption of the Communist party. Again, she gave me the look.

It's like she couldn't wrap her head around the idea that a book with talking animals could be so deep.

I wonder what she thought about Lord of the Flies. A book with nothing but kids (save for the pilot and the rescuers at the end.) I can imagine her going, "That's a kids' book too, right? All the characters are children!"
