...yeah, that's not even how it works in the Bible.

I wouldn't know. I've read revelations and the book of Job (that poor sap) and parts of Leviticus and then I noped on out.

LOL hey, Job is supposed to be inspirational donchaknow! But basically, what the actual message is, is that the Word of God (John 1:1-5) incarnated as a fully human being, so He could live His life sinlessly, then make the choice to take on the sins of everyone who has ever lived or died. (See also: the garden of Gethsemane.) According to the book, this means Jesus is THE living exemplar that God gave ALL human beings free will. And, as you'll note from Revelation, nobody now, in this life, has to choose to follow God, if they don't want to...that choice, for everyone, comes after the "new heavens and new earth" bit. (Hint: There's also no "eternal hellfire" for those who choose the opposite.)

Needless to say, the sermon you're referring to is not going by the Book at all. Just banging on it.

Then it wholly unsurprising that my partner would bring it up as something she heard in her church. They were very book-bangy, it appears.

But thanks for clearing that up! I feel somewhat less woefully uninformed now.
