Marvel has been pretty bad at times.

It really depends on the writer. Claremont, PAD, and DeFalco all did pretty good work for very long runs at Marvel. Lately, Kelly Sue DeConnick and Charles Soule are good. (But Soule's been working for both Marvel and DC.)
