Re: my financial aid fell through
(Anonymous) 2015-01-02 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)I suspect that the anon you replied to was thinking, less that being homeless is a walk in the park, and more that it's not necessarily the catastrophe one might expect, especially if it's temporary and you have only yourself to provide for. I go to a huge state school in the Midwest, and I've thought more than once that if you had the bad luck to be homeless, the campus would be a better than usual place for it. Many buildings (including the student union) are open all night, and Campus Security has no way of telling the person sleeping there out of necessity from the person who went there to study and fell asleep over their books. The school is in a town that's fairly decent wrt resources for homeless people: there's a church where they serve a free hot meal every day (without making people listen to a sermon before they can get fed), a couple of food pantries, including one for perishables and one that was started by students specifically to help food-insecure students. A student would be able to access the showers in the university gym, too.
Hell, a homeless guy took up residence this fall in the basement of the university library, and nobody ratted him out or anything.
