You're probably not wrong, but you're the first person I've ever seen justify their preference this way.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-03 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
Makes sense to me. Some people prefer that the assholes be loud and aggressive and unshamed being terrible people but at least they're open about it so you know who to avoid, which is the general tone of male dominated fandoms, and others prefer the assholes be passive aggressive and cliquey and pretending to be nice, so you can pretend it doesn't exist if you want to, which is the general tone of female fandoms

IMO anyway

I find it easier to deal with male dominated fandoms because of this. Not that they are any better, they aren't (there tends to be different kinds of problems when dealing with guys). In my experience the assholes are out in the open, tend to be unpopular with the others anyways, and you know who likes you and who doesn't.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-03 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
But what about tumblr assholes? Very loud, very aggressive, very female.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-03 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
'Very female'? Have you seen the average 'About' page over there? A lot of them couldn't decide whether they're actually carbon-based life forms, let alone male, female, both, neither, gay, straight, bi, or Give-Me-A-Minute-I-Haven't-Invented-A-Label-For-It-Yet if their lives depended on it.

Your comment made me laugh quite hard. But, now I must pay my penance to the Non-Gender/Every-Gender, Pansexual/Asexual, God[s]/Non-God[s] of Tumblr for my sin.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-03 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
Oh shit! I just realized my comment seemed to be putting things into binaries D: I'm sorry Tumblr! Please, have mercy!

(Anonymous) 2015-01-03 04:01 am (UTC)(link)
This may be the most accurate comment I've ever seen on F!S.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-03 02:38 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL! You made me spit coffee. Thanks!

(Anonymous) 2015-01-03 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
That's a very small minority of female dominated fandom and if you notice, the people who prefer female dominated fandoms also tend to not like tumblr specifically

(Anonymous) 2015-01-04 08:10 am (UTC)(link)
Okay...please tell me where all these other female fandom spaces are? There's LJ/DW female fandom, which is nonexistent/defunct whereas the tumblr versions aren't.

I'm not even being sarcastic, I'd love someplace to fandom other than shit tumblr.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-03 05:17 am (UTC)(link)
Yep! I'm a guy, and I hang around places like this because I prefer the fangirl style of being just fucking awful to the fanboy style of being just fucking awful.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-03 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
Makes sense to me, but I think the tendency to claim one side is 'better' boils down to the fact that (some) people are constantly looking to be better than someone else, no matter what or where they are. It's a quick feeling of validation.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-03 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
Possibly the most accurate secret I've seen.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-03 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
Surprisingly this makes a lot of sense now that I think about it. I realized I'm more biased against younger people (usually under 20), because I can't really handle their communication style or sense of humor.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-03 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
I pretty much agree. Even down to the asshole vs asshole thing.

I don't prefer male dominated fandom places. Too much posturing. And we have different things that interest us in fandom. I'm thinking that HP Dark Lord forum... So. I think it's stereotyping. And simillar to how someone with internalized misogyny will say that they prefer to be friends with guys because girls are so 'catty'.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-03 03:15 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you for being reasonable with your reasons for your choice. I've seen too many goddamn idiot arguments about what gender dominated fandom is better. Also, all fandoms are different and can attract different people of any gender. In the end you get people acting like assholes no matter what, just having a different style of assholery.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-03 11:51 am (UTC)(link)
as a woman, i prefer male asshole dominated fandoms than female asshome dominated fandoms. you don't know when their ire will fall onto you.

This is one of the most insightful observations I've ever read about the whole issue.

For my own anecdata, I don't really have a preference for asshole type either way, which is probably why I've been in a mixed bag of male- and female-dominated fandoms. Huh.
