A lot of people have argued that they felt so pressured by society to be heterosexual that they dated men because obviously the Avatar world should have the same attitudes about homosexuality as our world because that's not boring or depressing at all

I can kiiiinda see that, but I thought at least Korra's feelings for Mako were clearly very genuine (don't remember Asami's so much but I see no reason to assume they weren't)

And yeah, like you said, no reason to assume homophobia is a big thing in that world.

There's no canonical evidence that the Avatar world is horribly homophobic, but there's evidence everywhere that it's heteronormative. No need to assume everyone who thinks societal pressure to be straight would exist there is being boring and depressing.

tbh, even though fandom is a nice bubble of queer, statistically hetero IS the norm.
