That's ridiculous. There'd still be cries of asspull because Makorra shippers would still be a thing even if Asami was a dude from the start. It'd probably be worse because then Makorra probably wouldn't have been the disaster it was without the love triangle.

(Unless it was Korra everyone was fighting over instead of Mako. And then Korra would've been the giant asshole. Yeesh. I'm glad Asami wasn't a guy.)

I hate the "if this character was a different gender then!!!" argument.

It has some truth, though. I don't think ALL the dissenters would be singing a different tune, there'd still be ship wars, but you would NOT be seeing this "there was no buildup!" from such a large number of people. I mostly say this because there is SO MUCH "look, they're just good friends!" and it sounds like they're bending over backwards to convince themselves that they're no icky gayness in that last scene...but if a guy and a girl were going on a vacay together HOLDING HANDS with romantic music playing, the outrage would be more along the lines of traditional ship wars ("he's better! no he is!") and you'd hear none of this "oh they're just friends!" bullshit.

except for it's completely relevant in a world where lesbians and women in gay relationships are talked down to and not even acknowledged as being in "real" relationships. gay male characters may receive outright homophobia, but lesbians receive a different kind of stigma where people don't even acknowledge they're in a real relationship. it happens in fandom and it happens irl– see: any celebrity in a lesbian relationship out with their girlfriend and being labelled a celeb and "her galpal." lesbians are not taken seriously, and their relationships are not given any shred of legitimacy. it's totally relevant that the number of people bending over backwards to say they are "just friends!!!" would be a LOT lesser were they a male and female character instead, because culturally we're taught to read heterosexual interactions into everything, and downplay anything else.
