I've built shelves for myself before. I used my Dad's tools, but the materials were affordable and it was dead easy. Just measure thrice, cut once, and make sure the shelves are sizes you'll use instead of just a default size! (On my shelf the bottom shelf is big enough for graphic novels but the others are only mass-market paperback size)
