We both don't drink often (like once or twice a month) and I usually don't get drunk. Problem is most everyone we know drinks daily and drinking is their main source of entertainment.

well, then, what you actually seem to need is new friends, because all of yours are serious alcoholics.

regardless of how often you drink, if drinking leads to serious terrible decisions, you should stop drinking (or getting high, or going to singles bars, or what the fuck ever). if you remove the stimulus, you're probably going to get rid of the response.

In regards to family: Drinking a lot is kind of a hazard of living in a small town with nothing else to do. Everyone drinks and it's boring if you don't join in because then you have to sit around and listen to drunk people talk and that's the woooorst sober.

In regards to friends: All the single or childless people I know drink. If I want friends who don't drink, I'll have to be friends with people with kids. (And that's not always a guarantee they don't drink.) I've never known any adult who doesn't go to a bar or a party as a their way to be social. That's what you do-- invite people to go to bar. That's pretty much the only way I've made friends as an adult, which is why all my friends are drunks.

all of that is actually rather sad.

I don't know what to say though since I live in a city. Are small towns really that boring? If the environment is that bad for you, could you relocate? (I hope this doesn't sound high-and-mighty, just...it sounds super unhealthy)

They're not really that boring. anon is either exaggerating to make themselves look better or lives in an especially awful place.

I was wondering if the problem wasn't actually that anon's friends are just super boring.

No, they're not. I live in a very small town and the drinking culture is miniscule across all age groups.

Being bored isn't an excuse for the pathetic levels of lacking personal responsibility OP's showing.
