I get weirdly annoyed by people who claim to respect life when what they really respect is sentience. Most people don't give a damn about anything that isn't cute or can't be easily anthropomorphized even if it's just as alive as their cat or the cow they refuse to eat. Which is fine. No one is obligated to care about all living things. But it annoys me when people aren't telling the truth because I'm an irritating pedant who thinks too much.

For some reason one of the only specific examples that's coming to mind is from A:TLA. Aang talks to Yangchen, one of his past lives from the Air Nomads, about how all life is sacred and she agrees with that and he says "I know! I'm even a vegetarian!" And all I can think is "so plants aren't alive?" I know that this is sometimes an annoying gotcha thing that people bother vegans with, but really, if it's not life that is so important to you then stop saying that and say what you really mean.

Okay, but where does that end? You can't live without killing something for sustenance, whether it's animal or plant. Are you saying that literally by existing, we're hypocritical for saying we think life is sacred?

Thinking life is sacred isn't about not taking life. It's about respecting that you've taken life to continue to live, and appreciating that animal/plant for its sacrifice. There's no conflict in that ideology.
