"no poo"

has anyone given up shampoo? I'm considering it because of the supposed benefits to your hair. I wash my hair every day and I know that's not good for it.

I've heard you have to go through an adjustment period where your hair sucks for a while and I'm too self-conscious to fully commit to that. One time, I washed with baking soda and vinegar and it worked really well. Another time, I ended up with crusty hair.

You might be better off trying to stretch your washes before you try cutting out shampoo. Even just washing your hair every other day will probably net you some improvement.

DA

That's what I'm doing. I switched to every other day after my hair grew longer and started looking ok the second day and I can tell it's less oily than it used to be. Now I'm giving it a try for every three days to see if that's doable, because washing my hair is a pain.

I'm not quite convinced that no shampoo will make everyone's hair suddenly perfectly lush and beautiful. That being said, it's no secret that shampooing every day is way too often. Shampoo, especially most of the ones sold at normal stores, are really damaging. After all, they break down grease and oils, and that's why you need conditioner to sort of repair the oils that were lost.

Rather than showering every day, you could try a dry shampoo if you feel really greasy? I don't know if they are still just as bad, but a quick spray at least doesn't put your hair through the wetting/drying process, and probably doesn't do as much to your scalp and suck because you don't scrub it in.

Shoot for washing your hair two or three times a week first. Your hair will be healthier for it, and you'll save water too.

Whether or not shampooing every day is good for you depends on the shampoo and conditioner you use. Some are way more harsher than others. As well as your own DNA. Some people can go without washing and end up with beautiful hair. Others can't do that without their hair clumping into a greasy ball.

I use a sulfate-free shampoo, (Devacurl) and my hair feels soft and clean. I swear by it. Try to go for a sulfate free shampoo and see how that works for you.

Not shampooing daily won't make your hair magically perfect, but it will definitely help dryness. What I do is wash with conditioner every day - I use it like a shampoo, and scrub it into the scalp, then wash out really well (you don't want conditioner residue on your scalp). Apply a little extra conditioner to the roots if your hair's extra-dry, which mine is, and rinse as you would normal conditioner.

Water and conditioner every day; keeps my hair and scalp feeling fresh and clean. It took me a while to wean off the shampoo, but now I only use on rare occasions (if my hair's extra greasy/dirty for whatever reason) - other than that, I don't miss it at all, and I definitely feel like my hair's better off for it.

Also seconding sulfate-free shampoos. If you're having trouble finding a decent range, try looking at baby shampoos - they tend to be milder and gentler on your hair.

I could never. My head is so oily and it gets itchy.

anyway you know there's some middle ground between "every day" and "never", right? Well, back up: some people do need to wash every day, if your hair needs it, it's not bad. But if washing every day dries it out, try going every other day, every third, or even once a week and see what works for you. Probably not a very good idea to give it up entirely though.

i have. i can't be bothered with homemade stuff, though, way too lazy. i use a product called 'morocco method', and it is amazing. i wash my hair about once every 4 days or so, depending on which product i use, and my hair is amazing. literally everyone i meet compliments me on my hair (the hair stylists at my salon seriously fawn over it), no joke. my hair is thicker, shinier, it's perfectly hydrated, it's insanely voluminous, there is way less shedding...god i could go on for days about it.
