That extra $50 a month that a person might spend on entertainment isn't going to be more useful if they put it towards "bettering their situation".

Are you just being deliberately stupid?

$50 a month saved up instead of spent on a luxury good you don't actually need and won't actually affect your life one way or another (save for possibly the hour you spend playing before reverting back to complaining about your shit and whining that you've just wasted $50) = $600 a year. That goes a very long fucking way to bettering someone's situation.
