But what about people who want to work it? It's time and a half for them. Believe it or not, many stores WILL opt for volunteers and those that volunteer probably did their thing early, have no family to do anything with, or friends are out of town, or a myriad of other reasons.

Not all, I would even say most, employees are forced into that.

Not saying some stores don't have shitty managers who do force employees, though. But I doubt it's ALL of them or even most.

I shop on that night cause it;'s one of the few nights /I/ can get off work (though i can volunteer to work as well, and i have in the past), so I enjoy it with my family.

That kinda feels like Russian roulette. What if they want to work it? Great. What if they all have families who they don't get to see often and want to spend some time with them? Not so great.

This year at the restaurant I work at we had people who volunteered to work Christmas. Great! Other years? we did not have enough people and one of my managers had to miss Christmas morning with his daughters to work even though he really didn't want to (don't remember if this was last year or the year before).

Yes, but it's why I don't see stopping this is good. Cause it IS an extra, non-work day that some people wouldn't mind working, especially fort the extra pay.

Christmas is usually not worked, except for those random places that are open, in which case, those people need to close up shop on that day. Period. I'd say Christmas is that one day most people want off. Thanksgiving is more of a so-so one to me, since it's only an American Holiday.

Ok well to be clear I'm talking about this in the context of the US, where basically everyone does celebrate Thanksgiving and a smaller (though still pretty significant) number celebrates Christmas.

And maybe it's just a case of differing priorities, because I do not the benefit of people getting to make a little extra money outweighs the risk of people missing an important holiday with their families.
