ok now I'm curious (and not being sarcastic at all, I know you have training in this area): how do you catch an STI except by having sex or possibly (such as with HIV) sharing needles?

Things like herpes and the HIV virus are hanging around literally everywhere. If you have the misfortune of being treated with infected hospital equipment, for example, you can contract HIV.

You can get oral herpes from unwashed cutlery at restaurants. In some cases people have contracted gonorrhea from public washrooms.

It's not as likely as direct contact of course, but it's possible to contract a variety of STIs from secondary sources.

Ah, that doesn't surprise me about oral herpes since I also know you can get it by sharing food. (I wasn't thinking of it as an STI though.)

Gonorrhea from public washrooms? Like...it's on the seat? Because I've always heard that was a complete myth.

It's not, unfortunately. It's extremely rare, but it's entirely possible if you happen to sit on someone's recent excretions. Particularly if you have a weakened immune system for any reason.
