Sure, you and I may say that but you've got to understand that the people who are on the other side of the fence don't believe it. And you know what? You can't beat them over the head/scream at them/walk all over them until they DO believe it, because that's not how you convince someone of something. You convince someone of something by proving it's true.

If a screaming, crying child walked up to you and demanded the same rights as an adult, would you give it to them? Probably not. If a child walked up to you and rationally explained why they should have the same rights as an adult and proved to you that they deserved those rights, I have a feeling you'd give it to them.

Now don't just focus on my wording and say "OMG YOU'RE CALLING WOMEN CHILDREN!!!!" but it was the best analogy I could come up with and in many cases, it's how the "other side" views us. Honestly, I kind of feel for the secret poster because to a man? It might look like what he's saying. People focus on the bad a lot and if he's seen a lot of the bad? Maybe it's all he can see anymore. Sure, it means that his mindset could use a lot of work, but if it's what he's seeing? They maybe he needs it to be proven otherwise to him.

It takes two parties to grant one party equal rights.

but just because one side is RIGHT doesn't mean everyone sees it

And that sums it up better than I did in an entire rant ^^'

I'm not even sure what the hell you're trying to say.

(Anonymous) 2007-12-31 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
I do get what you're saying, at least with the whole aspect of yelling and throwing tantrums. On the other hand, it's not up to men to *allow* women equal rights. It's up to us to demand them and refuse to accept anything less. Who cares whether they believe we deserve it or not? I'm not going to wait that long.

So.... you're just going to take it basically "over their dead bodies" and I hardly mean that literally? Ummmm we're trying that already with racism, and you know what? People resent it, which only makes the problem worse. You can't change the world overnight and being impatient leads to a sloppy job of it.

Equality can happen, but it takes time to change a worldwide mindset. You can't force people to change their minds and if you just implement the changes all at once without waiting for at least a large percent of the population to agree with you (of course asking for 100% is ridiculous -- there's always people that just won't change no matter what), you've got an idealogical revolution on your hands and then you've got people getting hurt on both sides.

(Anonymous) 2007-12-31 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
I think a large percentage of the population already DOES agree with us. Even taking into consideration that some women don't agree completely with equal rights. You can't sit back and just talk about things, hoping people will eventually agree with you. You have to demand laws be enforced, you have to get your voice out there when injustice happens. You have to draw attention to double-standards and all the ingrained sexism in society. It sometimes means speaking in a manner that isn't always polite, because when people don't want to see something, they won't, especially if you don't raise your voice and make them see it. They might not like it, but some of them will start to think about it. Some will start to evolve and change for the better.

btw, I'm not the anon at the top who swore at you. I suddenly realized it probably looks like I am, and I'm about being civil here.

It's okay. ^^' I worded things badly in the first place and I sort of started a fight I can't finish.

(Anonymous) 2007-12-31 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
It's cool. Because, seriously, you have a good point. We need to sort of mix the two ideas. ;)

Despite my thinking the secret poster is probably a whiny misogynist troll, IAWTC SO HARD. Screaming and whining and throwing shit at people is not the way to get what you want, no matter who you are. Which brings me to people who use their status as "victims" to get their way, but that's a whole other rant.

I prefer to think that he just was angry at the time the secret was written and worded things badly (usually, secrets are made because you've just had it up to here or something) but I think his point is valid. Its delivery sucks a fucking LOT of ass, though.
