Yes! She is awesome! So thoughtful and nuanced--I love how she finds a way to explain Effie's apparent silliness and naivete before Katniss and Peeta's first Games (SPOILER she was on the Capitol's version of Happy Pills because she was deemed just a little too sympathetic to Haymitch and the other Victors).

I'll second FernWithy's fics! I feel like I'm always reccing them around here, haha. Slow burn for the relationship, like other anon says, but it's done quite well and integrates well with the larger plot of the stories.

I love the ship SO MUCH but yeah...I read the fic even though most of it is crap :c so many 'EFFIE GETS PREGNANT' fics.

I like the ones that deal more with just two really broken people trying to patch each other up. Because lord, after the last book, Effie is fucked up too :c (not that she isn't already)

Have you read FernWithy's work on AO3? It's pretty slow burn in terms of their relationship, but it's terrific.

I've read it and it's AMAZING, by far and away the best fic for the ship. There's not much else to compare.

"The End of the World" covers Haymitch's appearance in the Hunger Games, and starting from there will provide the most cohesive story. Effie doesn't really show up until "These Are the Names," though, so if you don't care as much about worldbuilding you could probably start there if you wanted, but I don't think it would make for as satisfying a read.

Thank you for this post OP, I'm about to finishing reading the series, and Haymitch and Effie were the first ones I shipped, and now, people are posting some recs, so I'm excited!

Side note: I felt like Haymtich should have been played by Billy Bob Thorton. That was the first image that came to mind. Him and the guy who played the devil in Being Human UK.
