Well, he was a bad teacher,but we know he's a good guy who was really excited about getting the position, and really passionate about the animals. We also know that Malfoy, who is trying to screw him over, is doing it (mostly) unjustly, and out of cruelty. So Hagrid's a bad teacher, but not for lack of heart or knowledge, and that makes it easier to feel bad for him when things don't work out. Especially when the antagonist is one of the bad guys.
