I just came across someone who thinks a man in his late 30s being in a relationship with a woman in her early 20s is pedophilia.

I mean, maybe you can make the case that it's not wise, but...it's not pedophilia. That's not what that word means.

yeah, i came across something exactly like that just yesterday, actually. needless to say it was equally stupid.

Pedophilia is YOUNG CHILDREN. Early 20s is nowhere NEAR pedophilia

I mean, depending on the maturity levels of the couple it could be a little squicky - I remember my in college, there were twenty year old sophomores who acted like they were fifteen, sixteen. The idea of them being with a 37 year old man would be icky. But I also knew twenty year olds who acted about 37 years old, and thus probably did date older guys because that was their maturity level.

I learned my (college educated) coworker didn't know George Washington was the first President.

I mean, seriously? Here in the US we have that drilled into us in preschool. You should at least know that by sixth grade.

Well Um it's certainly a weird statement. I thought the point of the post though is "wtf?"

But just cuz it's creepy doesn't mean it's pedophilia.

AYRT - Yeah, I meant to say exactly that. There can be unsettling age differences because of the younger person's maturity level, but it's not pedophilia and it certainly doesn't mean it's true for anyone of those ages.

But you see, "pedophilia" is an actual word with an actual definition. It's not a catch-all for "things that are creepy". Gross immature men who are in their 30s and above but who date 20-something woman aren't pedophiles because that's not what pedophilia means.

It's really not that hard.

...My best friend's parents are ten years apart and happily married with zero marital strife. Her father is older. I don't find it creepy. They both have stable income, both raised two well-behaved children, etc.

So long as people wait until they're both of legal age? I have no problem with who does what with who.

My Dad and I had to sit blank faced through a conversation with a coworker* who sincerely believes the Port Arthur Massacre wasn't by a psychopath, but was a conspiracy by the government to bring in gun control.

Aside from being incredibly stupid, I'm baffled that they thought this was an appropriate conversation to have.

Even if I did, pedophilia certainly would not be the word for it. We're talking about a woman of legal age. Pedophilia involves children that are pubescent. Words mean things. You can't just throw 'pedophilia' at any couple you don't approve of.
