Well, "actively engaging" in the sense of taking a visible action to express approval/appreciation. And really, most people on ff.net and AO3 these days just favorite or give kudos, so if clicking one button isn't active engagement, then...I don't think there's any real active engagement at all anymore.

Huh. I just depressed myself.

It's depressing because it's not just fandom, it's the whole Internet that mostly engages by just clicking a button.
