Re: What are you NOT looking forward this year?
(Anonymous) 2015-01-05 03:05 am (UTC)(link)I'm sorry that you're going through this. I had to testify to the police a few months ago about a rapist who sexually harassed me after he raped one of my friends. It was awful and stressful, but I'm glad that I did it for her sake, and for the sake of getting him far away from other women.
I know it's hard but you're doing the right thing.
Re: What are you NOT looking forward this year?
Part of me wonders why I'm bothering, since I know nothing is going to happen. But I have to do SOMETHING. Someone has to.

On the plus side, I DO think I was able to actually make something happen by using a far less official, but far more effective tool: PEER PRESSURE.
That aunt lives in a cul-de-sac surrounded by a bunch of my other relatives, so I called them up and blew the whistle on her over the holidays, when EVERYONE comes down together. I told them what she did, and not to leave her alone with any of the children.
Even if they don't believe me, I'd like to think I upset them enough to at least WATCH her. It's not like it takes much effort, and once that doubt has been put in your head...
Re: What are you NOT looking forward this year?
(Anonymous) 2015-01-06 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)First of all: I'm so sorry you have to go through this, and I hope things turn out for the best.
Secondly: Peer pressure can do a hell of a lot.
When my mom was young her cousin and cousinchildren were murdered by the cousin's husband in a fire. The only reason he didn't get away with it was because he got too drunk to get out in time, so he died with them.
The asshole was apparently charismatic as fuck, because even with the police OUTRIGHT SAYING he did it (his car contained all the evidence) people still claimed it was a tragic accident. Between my mom, her other cousins, and the local gossip snatching up other things he'd done... Well, some never stopped believing it was just slander, but it got harder for them to deny the truth. At the very least they stopped trying to defend him openly.
Re: What are you NOT looking forward this year?
Peer pressure is HELLA powerful. I figure, it was enough to keep the old man safe for fifty years, I damn well better be able to wrench it to my benefit with a few phone calls. That said, I'm thousands of miles away from any of my relatives (thank GOD) so have limited influence. It's just as well; it means they have limited influence ON ME.
And eesh, that's a terrible thing to happen. My condolences, Anon.
