I've had issues with various sites autoplaying. For me, it was actually ads that started this, but with Tumblr and FB now auto-playing (or at least FB sometimes does), I am SO glad for the FlashBlock extension for Chrome. It exists for Firefox too. I actually have two installed, because FlashBlock didn't catch everything -- probably 95% of it, but auto-play annoys me SO MUCH that I installed another one (FlashControl), and... well, it means that to watch a flash video, I often need to click twice to run the video.

I know it's, uh, late, but in case anyone actually is reading this, I'd really make it a strong suggestion with Tumblr, esp with the graphic police brutality shit going on -- which, I think is very important to post about and be spread, but I don't want to be scrolling down and automatically have that playing! The other common one (at least on my friends list, and probably more common on FB than Tumblr) is animal abuse videos, and no... I don't want auto-play of ANY OF THAT. If it's something I feel I need to watch, I want to be able to actively CHOOSE to watch it, and take anti-anxiety meds beforehand because damn, I am gonna need em.

I mean, this doesn't solve the other issues with Tumblr, which I could go on a whole rant about, but it sounds like auto-play is a really big issue for you, and one of these extensions would stop that. And I hear you on the computer lagging. I have a very GOOD machine, and even MINE would lag at that; it'll lag trying to load when people make a huuuuuuge animated gif post, which is one part internet, one part computer going YOU ALREADY HAVE A HUNDRED TABS OPEN AND YOU'RE DOING THIS TO ME NOW, FUCK YOU, HAVE SHITTY LOAD TIME. (Caps not meant to be yell-y at you, just how I imagine my computer responding... LOL.)

You know what, that's the second rec I've had for FlashBlock, and I think I'm going to install it. My computer is nine years old and slightly possessed, I don't want to make it miserable with autoplay vids.

Seriously though, why do sites think this is a good idea? Do they think everyone on earth has a fast connection and a sleek speedy machine? Come on!

(And this is why I make my websites dial-up and text-only browser friendly.)

...aw. Turns out the tumblr autoplay videos aren't all Flash. *sadface*

I think companies just figure if you don't have a fast machine you're not a meaningful part of the demo and not really worth caring about

Apparently. -_- That or they assume since the DESIGNERS have great machines, surely the audience does too!
