Do people expect to be warned of character death if said character death is canonical?

i do. i mean, my main fandom is merlin, and if i'm reading an arthur/merlin fic, i want to know if it's going to end how the show did, because that is exactly what i'm NOT looking for. i think a lot of people feel that way, and at least in this particular fandom people will tag for canonical character death.

Gotcha.

I can see how the situation could be even worse if a fic is tagged with something like "fix-it" but doesn't mention character death (because a reader might (wrongly) assume that what was fixed was the canonical death).

There's an AO3 tag for "canonical character death" which I've used several times, so yes. It's not as bad as not warning for non-canonical character deaths, but it's still a nice courtesy.
