Accidental Rudeness

To go along with the rude thread, what accidentally rude things have you said, or heard someone else say?

When I was a kid, my big sister hated how she looked, so I wanted to cutely tell her she was pretty. Well, "not" was really big back then, so I started, "you're ugly-"

It was supposed to end in "not," but suffice to say I did not get that far. :(

Started telling the story about a nasty motorcycle crash I saw a little while ago, remembered partway in that the person I was telling it to lost her husband in a motorcycle crash and it was really hard for her. Sputtered to a stop, apologized, will have that memory come back to haunt me until I'm 90, I have no doubt.

My uncle once told a woman, "I've always wanted to be on top."

He really wasn't being pervy, he has a weird sense of humor and actually meant "on top" literally - it was the "always" that was the joke, but of course that's not how she took it.

I used to date a trans woman, neither of us knew until after we broke up.

When I found out I was kicking myself over various things that were transphobic in hindsight. Even though she was the one that started the "You wear the trousers in this relationship," jokes.

At work today a woman came in to buy her son a textbook, but when talking about their options, I said "mother...?" with a question mark (since I know people who have aunts/uncles who buy their textbooks, and I don't ever want to assume people's relationships).

I think she thought I was insinuating she was the boy's grandmother though, the way she took it.

I did try to clarify that I wasn't sure if she was an aunt or whatever, but I still feel kind of bad. ^^;

I once told a woman I thought she resembled a certain male celebrity who is generally considered very attractive. It was supposed to be a compliment, and it didn't occur to me that she would think I was saying she looked like a man.
