Maybe character death bothers people more in fanfiction because if you’re reading fanfiction, you probably have a fairly developed emotional connection to those characters that might not be present the first time you interact with source material? Besides, it’s pretty easy to get death spoilers for popular media nowadays.

IDK. I’m probably the wrong person to ask. When I was starting out in fandom, asking for a character death warning was sure to get you laughed out of the fandom. It’s funny how far the pendulum has swung in the other direction.

My secret is that I can’t be arsed about warnings, so I just slap a big ole “Choose Not to Warn” on everything I produce and go about my business.

Me too! And from the sounds of it, I'm about the same vintage as you.
