What defines a petty secret to you?

(Anonymous) 2015-01-06 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
I misread the above thread asking about "pretty" secrets and thought, "What the heck, might be interesting to know what FS thinks!"

So what kinds of secrets make you roll your eyes and say "let it go" or "really? THAT's what's bothering you?"

Secrets that are clearly meant to be about how annoying a specific person is. They feel really passive-aggressive.

Agreed. That always bothers me, partly because I know it would be a nightmare for me if I saw me up there in the secret.

NAYRT - There's actually been times I have wondered, and one time was half convinced, but the OP said it wasn't me. I just think it's better to confront that person directly. Unless it's something generic enough that it really could be anyone and everyone - those I'm fine with. It's the slightly more specific ones...

"I JUDGE YOU"

Now this is a good one.

Sometimes "I feel like I'm the ONLY one who doesn't like.." type posts irk me for things that have a vocal hatedom or a good amount of people who don't like it. I can't help thinking "NO you are not, and I kinda feel like this was just an excuse for a "hate circlejerk" .

It doesn't bother me if its something that doesn't usually get people chiming in to say "I don't like it", but when the "I don't like [this popular thing]" conversation happens for the tenth time, it's just "ughhhh, we KNOW".

"I can't believe everyone thinks What's-his-face is sooo hot. He looks like a spork with eyes!"

And, alternately, "I think Not-conventionally-Hollywood-pretty is sooo dreamy. What is wrong with me? Tee-hee!"

Honestly, I think these are more worthy of the failbar than the "I ship it" secrets. Some of those are fun, and some people actually give a fuck about shipping. Why should anyone besides you and people who want to date you care who you find attractive (or not)?

I don't really spend much time eyerolling at secrets in general. If it doesn't interest me, I move on. It seems pretty funny to me to consider that a secret you post to a community is sooo important you can't "waste" it by posting a trivial secret or opinion.

Too bad -- a good eye-roll can be mighty cathartic.

You can post whatever stupid shit you want as long as it's vaguely fandom related and has "I think" in front of the first statement. But just because you thought "I think Korra has spirit toast for breakfast every morning" was something that you just had to share with the class doesn't mean that you were right. Rolling our eyes is about the only entertainment value that secret's going to provide.
