Question Regarding Tagging

(Anonymous) 2015-01-06 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
How do you tag for pairings?

I like to write canon-compliant slash fic but one of the slashed characters has a girlfriend. So when i write fic, I often have a few chapters of them going through an amicable breakup before my pair gets together.

I always make sure to note that they breakup in the fic tags so no one's confused about endgame.

My question though is: should I tag the canon couple? Because I've had some readers request that I do this to make it easier to avoid (as they don't like a HINT of the canon couple in the fic they read). But on the other hand, I know that fans of the canon couple get frustrated because then it turns up in results for their pairing.

What do I do? I feel like I'm caught between a rock and a hard place.

I would say tag the character but not the pairing. And mention "brief b/c" in notes. That would be my instinct.

Does that let you filter out the pairing though?

I honestly feel like you should only tag for the pairing that the fic centers around, and that your author's note for the first chapter should mention that you'll be dealing with the canon couple. Tagging for the canon couple is misleading in a way that simply noting the canon couple is not, in the sense that people who are searching for fics involving the canon couple will be drawn to yours despite it not meeting their preferences.

It's a tough thing, because you'll piss people off either way, but I think you'll piss fewer people off if you tag for the general bent of the fic and just note for the build-up.

I would say make a note at the top of your fic that the canon pairing is in it to start, but will break up shortly into the fic.

It sounds like whether you tag the canon pairing or not, you're going to displease some people, so it doesn't matter either way.

Myself, I'd only tag the pairings that survive to the end of a fic, or those that are at least in most of it. It feels like a better description. So I wouldn't tag the canon pairing unless they didn't break up for most of the fic.
