I can't really make a blanket statement on this. I can say that in general I prefer mystery stories to stay focused on the mystery itself and not the personal life of the detective. I sort of like to sit inside the detective's POV and sift through the motives of the rest of the cast. That doesn't mean I want the detective character to be empty or weak, I like them to have a strong sense of personality, but I don't want to be focusing too much on them.

And then, on the other hand, there are several detective characters that I love and enjoy seeing little personal details about, and other detective characters that I hate and spend the entire mystery wishing someone else was solving it, regardless of how well they're actually doing.

(Occasionally, this happens to me with different portrayals of the same detective: I was always rather charmed by David Suchet's version of Poirot, despite his flaws, but wanted to punch Ustinov's version right in the face. He was just so unbearably smug all the time).

So ... depends on the detective?
