I did read a bunch of L/Light genderswapped femslash back in the day, if that helps. When you have such a crazy juggernaut slash pairing it's usually bound to have some genderswapped stuff, and I know there was some for Death Note.

I also like them as women, but I think I'm too attached to them in all their male homoerotic subtext glory to wish the canon were different. There are a couple characters in the series that I do wish had been women instead of men (namely Mello or Near) though.

Yeah didn't everyone think Mello was a chic for a little while there? He's my favorite character though and also less smart and more crazy like every other female in this series, but Near? Give that boy some boobies.

Yep, I thought Mello was a woman at first and was like, "Seriously? Another crazy and clearly-not-genius female character WHY".

And then I realized he was a guy, and THEN he got better and I was like, don't know if I would have preferred it if he WAS female...

Just wish the author had switched some genders of the characters (not just Mello but Near like you said) at the last minute -- that would have been gr8.
