Oh, yeah, you're right. There are cliches and tropes, and they're all over the place, and it's not a story that I haven't heard before. But so far it's been executed so well. The writing and the acting are really on point. My impression currently is that this is a game that makes the case for the fact that lack of "originality" doesn't mean "bad." All of our stories are old; whether or not we connect to them depends on the telling.

Also, I have to admit...now I'm kinda scared, haha. I went into this expecting a lot of emotional upheaval, but reading that the capitol building is nothing is making me all like "...oh crap." I guess I'm in for it. :)

I wholeheartedly agree; I don't see anything wrong with the game not having a groundbreaking new story to tell, what's important is the quality of the telling. For me it had that in spades.

I only mention it because some people point out it isn't anything new as if that's a negative. To some people it is, but I didn't matter to me. It is predictable, but that didn't stop me from being moved or caught up in the story and acting. The VA's in this game are fantastic and the settings and music are hauntingly beautiful.

Oops, maybe I shouldn't have said that... But hey, you said you expected emotional upheaval, so what's a little more? (You should totes PM me when you finish; I'd be interested in your thoughts!)

I think there's a certain malaise and cynicism that comes along with saying that something isn't new. There's a finite number of plots, and what most of us think of as old hat are just modern takes on old tales. We were telling "zombie" stories centuries ago. We were just telling them without zombies, and a lot of people don't seem to pick up on that.

Gah, saying all of that makes me feel really arrogant.

In any case...I think "predictability" is both an easy criticism and a really poor measure of a story's effect and power. I was spoiled for what happens in the capitol building. I didn't know when it would happen, but I knew that it was going to happen. It still punched me in the gut and had me sobbing. That's more important to me than whether or not I saw it or was told that it was coming.

Buuuut anyway! I don't know what what you said means, so I'd say it hasn't really effected anything, lol. Also I will totally PM you when I'm done! That might take a while, because I'm all over the place, but...it'll happen!

I agree with pretty much everything you said. (Even though I prefer to avoid spoilers, spoilers don't automatically make everything that happens meaningless or less effective. There is still some notion of surprise from when and how exactly events unfold, and seeing something play out that you've only read about is totally different because of the whole package: the animation, music, actors, writing, etc. Things don't need to be new or shocking to be worthwhile, they only need to be good.)

Granted, people are allowed to think the game isn't good, I will just disagree with them. :p

And that's okay, take your time! (I'm just eager to hear what you think of it because I haven't had a chance to talk in depth yet. No one I know has played it.)
