You're a gamer if one of your hobbies is gaming. There are lots of people who haven't owned a console. There are lots of people who haven't played the types of games that you're referencing. One of the beauties of gaming is that there's something out there for everyone.

Those people who treat gaming like it's some elite club? They're a lot more interested in status than in having fun. And who really wants that, anyway (...aside from the people consumed with status, I guess)?
