People who seriously have to avoid a particular thing spoil themselves on original works: they either look them up for a synopsis or ask friends about the content before reading or watching. I prefer to do the second because I have friends who specifically know what I have to worry about and can go "this is safe" or "this isn't safe" without having to spoil all the plot twists, but in a pinch I'd rather be spoiled than sick.

This isn't an option with fanfiction because there are no review sites or wikis to lay out that information, so the reader is dependent on the author for tags or warnings.

It's really that simple.
