The Twelve Dancing Princesses. Mainly because of a book I had as child that had the best illustrations.

Any chance the illustrations were by Kinuko Y. Craft?

Was it the one illustrated by Sheilah Beckett? Because I had that one as a kid and I loved the art.

Looking at it, no. This version was in a collection of fairy tales, iirc.

Robin McKinley did a version in one of her short story collections that was just wonderful.

I've thought of this story lately, but didn't remember it's name until recently.
