But one that would go very wrong, very quickly.

Quite frankly, look at all the drama that surrounds cosplaying as it is. The people who say only those who can really look like the character should bother, only attractive people should bother, only those with nice costumes should bother, etc. And then on the other end, the kind who say that you should cosplay as whoever you want, no matter what. And then the people who fret about things like gender (is it somehow insulting to actual genderqueer people to crossdress just for a cosplay?), race (both from racists decrying anyone non-white cosplaying white characters, and SJWs decrying anyone white cosplaying non-white characters), costume investments (i.e. how much time and/or money is "acceptable" to invest into a cosplay or costume), the fandom debates about characters, multiple interpretations and variations of characters, etc. etc. etc.

Now, take all that drama, and instead of being sliced down by fandom and/or sub-circle, it's all concentrated into one website or community...one that involves you submitting a picture of yourself to fandom types.

It's a nice idea, but short of having an insane mod:user ratio, I don't see any way this wouldn't crash and burn.

I agree. There would be wank, there would be crying, it might end very badly.

Yeah, sadly there's no way to do this without people, and people fuck up everything.

I feel pretty confident in going further than "might". The biggest problem is people posting pictures of themselves to this kind of environment. As another commenter mentioned below, there would be a flood of assholes who'd come in just to mock people's looks, weights, etc. - and that's on top of all the cosplaying drama I mentioned above.

Xlaus's gallery-system idea would probably be a better way to go.

I agree. In theory it's a cool idea, but it would turn nasty so quickly.

You've articulated quite well why this would be a very bad idea.

What it needs are good sane mods, ready to stamp down bullshit hard and fast. This thing would have to be well staffed, especially if having a good place to do this, it became popular.

can we just clone Case and use him as a mod for everything?

I feel so spoiled, being here, and hearing about other communities that have terrible mods. ;-;

this comment kinda sounds creepy, wow, it's definitely not meant to be creepy

Nah, not creepy at all.

One I made my jump from FFN to LJ, the first kinkmeme/community I was really a part of had a fantastic group of mods. They were extremely well-organized, quick to respond, polite but firm, creative, etc.

I was disappointed to discover they were the exception, rather than the norm. :(

Not at all! I can only think of one other community I've been in that was as well-modded as F!S is today, and unfortunately it's dead today.

And that's before getting into people who think only one specific person can cosplay a certain character, and god help you if you're even considering the same character...
