My parents aren't in fandom, but they consume a lot of the same media as I do. My mom, who is a big scifi/fantasy fan but also a pretty conservative person, mentioned to me one day, "I've heard about this series called 'Game of thrones' or something that's supposed to be pretty good, ever heard of it?" I had to express in strongest terms how much she would NOT like the series, while avoiding the question "Hey, if it's got so much[xyz], why do you know so much about it??" Bless her heart. She's a good person but there would be pearl-clutching a plenty.
