Recommend me a video game!

(Anonymous) 2015-01-08 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
(Oh yes, another of THOSE threads...!)

I like the interactive storytelling aspect of video games, but there's a lot of things about me that make me suck at the majority of them. (poor reflexes, gets lost, bad at puzzles) Telltale's The Walking Dead was quite my speed, and I've played a good bit of WoW in my time, but that's about as much as I've managed. Any recommendations? I've been interested in the 'choice-based' games like Dragon Age and (?)Mass Effect, but I haven't been able to determine if I will stall out in those because they require accurate aiming or somesuch.

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated! Please feel free to ask for recs of your own.

If you liked TWD you'd probably be into The Wolf Among Us. Similarly styled Telltale joint.

The usual recommendation would be visual novels, but I'm curious . . . have you ever tried turn-based strategy games? You wouldn't have to worry about reflexes or getting lost. (This could cover anything from sims like Civilization to strat-RPGs like Luminous Arc.)

So, if the first game that ever really hooked me was civilization, and I really like the Sims (well 2 and 3 and with mods), would you possibly have any other recs for turn-based strategy games I might like?

Honestly, I'm terrible at Civilization, so I never really dug into the genre. I know it's classified as a "4X" game, so this might be of some use: http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/FourX

I was just wondering if there was something similar but not exactly the same (like civilization and Sims have similarities but aren't really the same thing). That link wasn't really what I was looking for. (Although that makes a lot of sense if it isn't really what you like). Thanks for responding!

Well, this is REALLY old-school, but if you want something similar to Civ, the same dev made a game called Colonization. I remember liking it despite being terrible at it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sid_Meier%27s_Colonization

Hmm, strategy tends to fall in the same category as puzzles for me, aka 'does not compute'. Turn-based is a bit better than rts but I tend to tunnel-vision and a lot of them seem to require multitasking/micromanagement? Like, in Roller Coaster Tycoon I could have 2 fabulous rollercoasters and forget all the bathrooms, or in Sims one of them will have a great life and the others will be completely forgotten and need a magical therapist.

I *could* try Civ again, there was a kind of kiddie knock-off version I liked quite a bit when I was younger....

I've recently finished the first Dragon Age game, and didn't encounter anything that required good aiming/reflexes (I suck at things like that too), or any puzzles the felt too complicated. The battle system has an easy mode, and if you play on the PC I believe there are mods which can make it even easier. As for the game's story, I found that very enjoyable (although very dark in places), and the choices you make have a satisfying impact on how things turn out.

If you liked The Walking Dead, give Kentucky Route Zero and its free companion games Limits and Demonstrations/The Entertainment/Here and There Along the Echo a try. I fucking love this game and the wait for the next episode has been excruciating (they put Act 1 and 2 out in 2013 and we ended up waiting a year for Act 3 -- and it's closing in on a year for Act 4.) It's particularly satisfying if you're at all familiar with the early days of home computing, the Kentucky/southern Ohio region during the early-to-mid 1990s, old text adventure games, and art movements of the late 70s/early 80s (particularly that involving the use of then-emerging technology (sometimes blended with older, outdated tech.) This stuff isn't NECESSARY but I get the feeling this game has been designed specifically to cater to me and memories of being a teenager, so results may vary.

Dragon Age is amazing and you do not need good reflexes at all. It does not involve aiming. Seriously, you'll have no trouble with the combat.

Now, Mass Effect does involve aiming. I've been told there are some character builds that let you get away without it but it's one of the reasons I haven't played it yet.

I have to plug for Mass Effect. It's actually not too difficult on a lower setting and it is NOT COD-style shooting by any means (it's not even first-person). It's also amazing with a great story, beautiful art, cool music, and awesome worldbuilding, so if you like those things, go for it!

If I'm not mistaken, both Dragon Age and Mass Effect have "cinematic" or "narrative" modes or something like that where the difficulty in the combat sections is absolutely minimal so you can just enjoy the story. They also involve AI teammates who can do most, if not all, of the fighting for you.
