Yeah but that COMPLETELY goes against canon and it's just really frustratingly done.

He's so fucking over the top that he doesn't feel like a real character. It just felt like demonization because Denethor was portrayed so consistently negatively.

No argument there. I was disappointed with the way both Denethor and Theoden (before Gandalf freed him) were dealt with.

Actually, on reflection, I had more issues with Jackson overplaying negative traits in characters where it wasn't appropriate than with him not giving other characters enough. Elrond was another one...I never pictured him being so dour and disapproving, even bitter in the books as he came across in the movies.
