... not really. Tolkien's whole point is that the power of the Ring corrupts people, even simple, good-hearted ones like Bilbo and Frodo. I'm pretty sure Thorin's obsession with the Arkenstone and the wealth of the mountains is canon, though Jackson's probably expanded on it more because he's marketing the movie to an audience who hasn't necessarily read the books.

So... yeah, no idea what anon's complaint is about.
