It really is like this. The tinhatters/super creepy fangirls are such a ridiculously tiny minority (like genuinely, honestly, I watch all the tags and I've seen...three? three assholes like that), they're almost not worth mentioning-- but that doesn't make for interesting reading, so articles get written making the fandom out to be insane. And everyone else just runs with it. It's horribly disheartening.

I think also part of it is that some other fandoms (like Supernatural) have a larger or at least much more vocal contingent of tinhatters, so everyone is pro-acting to that expectation. Maybe fandom is actually learning from its mistakes (gasp) or maybe the Cumberbatch fandom is just more mature than the J2 fandom (seems unlikely, but I'm not in either one, so) but apparently the overall response has been much, much healthier, even if people are still expecting some ridiculous OTT drama that may or may not ever happen.
