God, the responses to number 16 piss me off.

"LOL U R STUPID LERN TO B TOLERENT"

hy·poc·ri·sy /hɪˈpɒkrəsi/
Pronunciation[hi-pok-ruh-see]
–noun, plural -sies.
1. a pretense of having a virtuous character, moral or religious beliefs or principles, etc., that one does not really possess.

[identity profile] aphelion-orion.livejournal.com 2008-01-01 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I'm going to play devil's advocate and say what I got out of that secret: That people/characters/whoever are "bad" if they do not believe in Christianity and that they "must be converted" in order to be "saved from divine retribution/eternal hell/etc". That's not a very nice viewpoint to take, so of course people are going to feel miffed that this person is implying their beliefs are bad.

[identity profile] vulgarweed.livejournal.com 2008-01-01 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. There's just simply no way to make the statement "I think everyone (fictional or not) who doesn't share my religious beliefs is going to burn in hell" inoffensive. It's offensive. Period.

But nobody's trying to censor that viewpoint. They're just emphatically disagreeing and/or mocking. Which is perfectly in keeping with "tolerating" it. "Tolerance" doesn't mean "nodding and smiling at every idiotic and/or bigoted idea that comes down the pike as if I had no capacity for critical thought."

If I wasn't already in a committed relationship, I'd be requesting your hand in marriage. Or at the very least a one-night stand at the local Marriott.

Completely agreed. But that's just my two cents.

[identity profile] sanae.livejournal.com 2008-01-01 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
Well, if the secret poster had said non-Christians were "bad" and "must be converted" I would agree with all the "LOL #16 IS AN IDIOT" comments. Except they didn't say that, just that they write fictional characters as Christians because they secretly don't like to imagine the characters going to hell.

I don't know, maybe it depends on what you read into it, but the secret seems pretty harmless to me.

[identity profile] aphelion-orion.livejournal.com 2008-01-01 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
I agree that it is a thing of interpretation, but if we're going by the implication that s/he feels the need to "save" mere characters "from hell" by making them Christian, how much is she going to be intolerant of real people?

Please note that I'm not saying that #16 is DOING this, I'm saying that's what a lot of people are worried about and frowning upon, myself included. It's in the way it's worded, and I've been addressed by one too many well-meaning Catholic priest/Jehova's witness/Mormon (I've yet to meet a Muslim or Hinduist who attempts this) talking to me in a similar way so that I'm wary of it.

[identity profile] dorknessrising.livejournal.com 2008-01-01 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
Um, nobody's telling the OP to be more tolerant. They're telling the OP s/he's a little nutters for worrying about the afterlife of people who don't exist.

Though I do think being unable to relate to people who aren't Christian or thinking any non-Christian is going to hell makes hir an asswipe.

[identity profile] maldaeien.livejournal.com 2008-01-01 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
I am not saying s/he should be tolerant. I'm saying it's really naive to think there's a fictional hell and that a piece of paper and/or words is going to end there for not being christian.

It is also an offensive statement: "Not a christian? See you in hell baby". I'm pretty sure you would have found this offensive if the poster had been of another religion or spiritual belief and had said the same but referring to her/his religion (Not a Jenova Witness? See you in hell baby!)

(Anonymous) 2008-01-01 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have been offended, since I'm not a Christian and still wasn't offended by the secret. But, hey, thanks for telling me what I think.

[identity profile] transephera.livejournal.com 2008-01-01 06:31 am (UTC)(link)
JENOVA witness? Join the cult of Sephiroth today! We have cookies!

[identity profile] maldaeien.livejournal.com 2008-01-01 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Of course! We have cookies and okasan makes us icons from times to times :P

And yeah, it was intentional, though I'm pretty sure this is already featured at Fandom_Wank (and if it isn't, I hope a generous soul does feature ths soon)

[identity profile] transephera.livejournal.com 2008-01-01 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I was about 65-70% sure it was intentional, I just thought it was funny XD

Haven't been to Fandom_Wank yet, do they throw a good party?

[identity profile] maldaeien.livejournal.com 2008-01-02 01:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Kaa-san feels proud of you <3

Fandom_Wank goes along the lines of Leslie Gore's old song "It's my party and I cry if I want to". There are so many awesome comments there that if journalfen had a community like metaquotes, they would only metaquote them.

Here be HTTP (http://www.journalfen.net/community/fandom_wank/)

[identity profile] kinneas.livejournal.com 2008-01-01 08:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I wasn't offended, just seriously lollering over a girl thinking Aeris Gainsborough is going to Hell. gfjskjf just typing that made me lol again

For what it's worth though, I can easily see how people WOULD be offended, because the (admittedly indirect) implication is, again, "If you don't follow my beliefs you will burn for eternity". I grew up in good ole Tennessee so I'm like wtfever at this, but don't be a dickweed because other people have the gall to be pissed off.
