The basic doctrine of Christianity is that ALL people are sinners, and that Jesus has the power to forgive us and accept us into Heaven anyway. It's up to the person themselves whether or not they want to accept his offer of forgiveness. God doesn't want to send anyone to hell - it's just where we go by default if we don't accept His offer of forgiveness.

What I'm trying to say is that I don't think it's fair to call her closed-minded when most Christians share the same beliefs. Yeah, it's a little funny that she applies it to fictional characters, but I can relate to feeling that way about my RL friends. If you believed that your friends were doing something to hurt themselves (such as self-mutilation or drugs), you'd worry about them, too. I don't want my friends to go to hell, but in the end, all I can do is be a good example of Jesus' love (a rare sight these days, even amongst proclaimed "Christians") and let them make the decision for themselves.

Sorry for the tl;dr, but I just wanted to help clear that up.

I think my wording was a little off, I probably should have said "narrow, one track view".

I mean if she really cares THAT much about whether people are Christian or not, that's pretty sad that she can't even deal with characters being of a different faith/without a faith even if she doesn't agree with it.

And I know what you're saying, although I personally find it....well I can't even put into words my distaste for that part of the doctrine, I didn't mean to offend. My bad.

You didn't offend, I just thought it was a bit - well, it's a common mistake that people make. I'm just tired of being labeled intolerant because I believe in what's been passed down in our faith for thousands of years. I think the idea is more akin to saying that those who refuse to board the lifeboat will die on the sinking ship, rather than a totalitarian idea of submit to the dictator or be executed. If that makes any sense, I dunno |D;;;

Well from an outsider's perspective, it seems a little ridiculous that there is only one lifeboat for a large ship. |D

I think that most other religions place salvation on deeds or rituals, kind of like trying to swim off of the ship; to save yourself. But since we all sin, we all fall short. Christianity is a bit different in that your salvation is placed in the hands of someone perfect, who won't fall short. That's the best way I can explain the concept, although I'm not a religion expert. I actually wanna take classes on theology for that reason. |3

Also depends on the Christian sect. If I'm recalling my Catholicism history correctly, somewhere in Vatican II a clause was added that if any person, regardless of religion, lived a good, moral life similar to the doctrine preached by the church then there's no reason for them to be denied heaven.

Of course with the current pope who seems INTENT on reversing all of Vatican II (Latin mass?! WHAT THE FUCK RATZI?!) this may be done away with.

/religion major mode

Edited to add: And not all of Christianity agreed with this statement. Well, at least not early on. There is a document that survives in fragments today called the Apocalypse of Peter (nongnostic). It's a disturbingly vivid apocalypse with various depictions of the punishments in Hell. However, the document includes one of the most beautiful sentiments I've ever heard within the Christian tradition aside from Origen's belief in the salvation of the devil. The text states that eventually, all sinners in Hell will be forgiven and allowed into Heaven for "'It is because of them that have believed in me that I am come. It is also because of them that have believed in me, that, at their word, I shall have pity on men." So if the people in Heaven pray for those in Hell to be forgiven, they will be redeemed.

Fuck accepting forgiveness, I want to have fun in this life instead of closeting myself away reading the bible about what an awful evil undeserving person I am. :P

Because closeting yourself away and self-pitying is clearly what Christianity is about. >_>

(different anon here)

well, I'm gay, and Christianity indeed tells me to closet myself away.
