(Anonymous) 2015-01-09 12:57 am (UTC)(link)"Colorblindness" can be a problem with books because people usually picture "a-racial" characters as white unless you explicitly state that they aren't more than once. That isn't as much of an issue with visual media, especially when it's for children.
Kids can totally deal with a pumpkin that turns into a stagecoach and the fact that Cinderella is abused by her family, but they're not going to be able to comprehend interracial relationships without addressing racism?
I think it'd be absolutely wonderful to show two people of different races in love with each other where there is absolutely no problem with it.
Sorry, I wasn’t being clear.
(Anonymous) 2015-01-09 01:25 am (UTC)(link)I wasn’t really talking about in the film itself. I meant Disney’s response, as a corporation, when asked to comment on race in regards to their fairy tales by the media. And so I don’t think they necessarily want to and that has an impact on their casting choices. [Reposted from above.]
I think it would be wonderful, too. I'm just not sure Disney wants deal with what would surround it.
