Dorian and Sera? (Or Dorian and Bull? Bull is pan, but maybe you meant him.)

I don't know what to say other than that's too bad and I'm sorry you don't like them. I've never wanted to romance this many of my BioWare companions before; I genuinely love the majority of them and think this is one of BioWare's strongest casts.

Tastes differ so much...there's no way to make everyone happy.

Wasn't there some wank a week or two ago where folks were saying Sera was an emotional abuser?
elaminator: (Dragon Age: Inquisition - Cass)

[personal profile] elaminator 2015-01-10 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
I think there was, but I skimmed it and haven't watched (or played) Sera's romance so I'm not sure how truthful it is. She's definitely a bit...different though, and I can see why people don't like her. I'm not entirely sure how I feel about her myself, but I heard that if you don't renounce being Dalish she'll break up with you. That's...I'm not sure what you would call that, emotional manipulation, maybe? (Someone else would have to fill you in.)

(Anonymous) 2015-01-10 02:50 am (UTC)(link)
Non spoiler version: If you're Dalish and you romance Sera she makes her religious beliefs very clear to you from the start of the relationship. Eventually there comes a point in the relationship where she's like "either we agree on religion or we don't" and that can end the romance.

And then tumblr collectively through a shitfit because their PC should be able to make Sera completely change her world view and accept their flawlessness!!!!!! People break up because of religious differences all the time irl. Only in Bioware fandom is it emotional abuse if you have the nerve to do it to the protagonist.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-10 12:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Wait, so they think she should completely change for you but you shouldn't change for her? I guess the hypocrisy shouldn't surprise me.

Welcome to the Dragon Age fandom.

Same! (Actually, I wanted to romance EVERYONE in DAA but that wasn't an option.) DA:O had the worst romances of the series, imo. Not terrible, but none of the arcs were as good as DA:I. And in DA2 every romance option was a horrible selfish asshole, which was cool in its way but damn. In DA:I at least SOME of the romances are with generally decent people (Dorian, Bull, Cass, Josie, Cullen, Harding) even if the remainder were DA2 level 'But I am a monster!' fair.

I would've romanced the hell out of Sigrun, Nate and Awakening!Anders. Maybe Velanna, too. (Never Oghren though. Sorry, Oghren.)

Alistair is still my favorite and I really loved Zevran and Leliana's romances so I don't necessarily agree with your opinions on Origins, but I do think that DA2 did a pretty good job with the romances themselves. (Even though the characters...well, despite liking most of them I only bothered with Anders and Fenris and enjoyed those, but I think most everyone in DA2 is crazy in some way; they aren't perfect, and I don't even think they need to be.)

Most of the romances in DA:I aren't quite so...dramatic though, and for that I'm glad. If sweetness and humor is your thing, then there's a lot to go around. The characters feel well developed too, but overall Inquisition isn't as depressing as DA2.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-10 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
OP : That's just what I disliked about the romances in DA:I - everything was so fluffy and nice, it bored me half to tears. Bull's romance especially - it all sounded like someone took the most vanilla bdsm 101 handbook and built the romance based on it without checking if all those explanations actually fit the game world's atmosphere (which I personally think they didn't).
elaminator: (Dragon Age: Inquisition (Leliana))

[personal profile] elaminator 2015-01-10 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
Well, that would explain it. I liked the romances this time around and thought they were a nice change of pace. There is some 'not fluffy and nice' stuff, but even most of that tends to allow for a happy ending. (You don't always have to take the happy ending, but it is mostly optional.)

We just have very different tastes; I loveeeeeeed Bull's romance and thought it was sweet, hot and fun. I've been wanting BioWare to include a BDSM romance in one of their games for a long time and thought it was well executed. Vanilla...well, idk, maybe to some, but regardless I dug the hell out of it.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-10 10:28 am (UTC)(link)
and yet they still called the iron bull a rapist and an abuser.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-10 11:21 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's what I don't get. I mean, it doesn't get any more safe, sane and consensual than the way the Bull romance is written. How can they rip shit out of context so much that they actually believe this "he's a rapist" makes sense to them?

(Anonymous) 2015-01-10 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
OP: Dorian and Bull (Bull not gay as in orientation but as in gay romance accessible. Sorry for the confusion!).

Yeah, it always comes down to taste. Would have been easier to just make everyone bi again - especially since the dialogues for bi Cullen and bi Solas apparently exist in the game files...
elaminator: (Dragon Age: Inquisition - Cullen)

[personal profile] elaminator 2015-01-10 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
Hmm, I hadn't heard of bi!Solas. (I had however heard one or two audio files that suggest Cullen was considered to be bi at some point. Seems like they didn't follow through and record the rest.)

I admittedly would've enjoyed that, but can see why they made certain characters strictly gay. I like playing as both genders in these games anyway (unless, as is the case of DA2, I don't like the VA of the protagonist or can't create a character I'm happy with) so I don't much mind.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-10 03:20 am (UTC)(link)
Bi!Solas has even more left over dialogue, so I really don't understand why it would have been too much to ask to include it. The race gate makes sense for Solas, so they wouldn't even have had trouble with the character model sizes.

I honestly think they made a big step backwards in the romance department. But yeah, differing tastes and all.
elaminator: (Mass Effect 2: Thane)

[personal profile] elaminator 2015-01-10 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
This isn't the first time BioWare has decided against making a character bi. (I remember Thane had some dialogue with a male Shepard, and...maybe another character did too?) It IS nice having all those options, but I'm not mad. Dorian in particular would've been very different bi.

As in gay romance for a male Inquisitor.

And I was probably going to agree with you, to an extant, if you were talking about Sera. But Bull is awesome and Dorian is one of my all-time favourite Dragon Age characters. So I'm sorry they didn't work for you but I'm going to enjoy the hell out of romancing them, when I get around to it because wow, so many options in Inqusition!

(Anonymous) 2015-01-10 10:36 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, sorry, non-native speaker, I mostly use "gay" for m/m relationships. Keep forgetting that it can be used both ways.

If you like Bull and Dorian, that's great for you! I never said nobody should like them, nor do I assume that just because I don't like them or their romances nobody else should. I understand why someone would like them. I just don't.

And since I really just wantedt to play a m/m romance and both choices are not my cup of tea, there are no options for me in Inquisition. So it's great that a lot of people have fun with it, but it's not for me and I'm a bit disappointed about it. I think the main problem I have is that both characters are kind of similar, in a way. They both have this self-absorbed vibe going, imo, and I would have liked an option that wasn't so damn full of themselves.

[personal profile] i_paint_the_sky 2015-01-10 02:00 pm (UTC)(link)
No worries. It gets complicated since sometimes gay is used to just mean m/m ("gay and lesbian") but sometimes means f/f as well. The English language is weird.

If it helps, I think a lot of Dorian's attitude is covering up a lot of personal pain. Bull has some of that too, though less so. And, of course, he also has the BDSM thing going on, which some people aren't interested in playing.
