No.

People who hate feminists do so because they hate women, and any movment dedicated to protecting and progressing women. People hate feminists because of misogyny.

"Distasteful" feminists who speak out in a less than appeasing way are just a conveniant excuse for people to hate women.

ehhhh...i don't think blanket statements like that can EVER be valid. people hate feminists for all sorts of reasons. i know quite a few people who hate 3rd wave feminists but are perfectly fine with the other ones, like the ones who fought for voting and wage equality and what-not.

In other words, the 'safe' feminists who don't rock the boat too much and stay nicely in the past and don't talk too loud and don't threaten their sense of "how the world ought to be" with ideas of actual equality.

Come ON. Quit kidding yourself.

Or the feminists who don't whine about stupid things like "phones being too big for our hands :CCCC", "men are spreading their legs on subways. misogyny!" "a guy looked at me while walking. EYE RAPE!" Or by sweeping generalizations like, "All men are rapists and should be castrated at birth!" Or "transmen are gender traitors." Or "transwomen are lying spies".

well i was going to reply but you put it rather well.

3rd wave feminists are doing a disservice to the fight for actual gender equality.

Kind of like how Muslims are all terrible and should be eradicated because Muslim terrorists kill people who disagree with them, am I right?

See the problem here is that you are deliberately choosing to conflate 3rd wave feminists with all of feminism (even as you pitch a fit accusing other people of doing that) and that someone who complains about the less savory aspects of 3rd wave feminism must therefore be necessarily hating on ALL FEMINISTS EVER. Your simile is utter garbage because any person, including many many many Muslims, with an ounce of common sense, knows that EXTREMISTS WHO KILL PEOPLE ARE BAD and that EXTREMISTS OF ANY RELIGION WHO KILL PEOPLE are the problem, and that therefore speaking against EXTREMIST Muslims is not a criticism of ALL Muslims. Just like speaking against the stupid and terrible and often HARMFUL things that the more extreme 3rd wave feminists promote is NOT AT ALL an indication that the criticizer hates all feminists ever. If you're gonna sit here and defend TERFs than you can gtfo of my feminism, honestly.

Actually, it tends to be much more the feminists who point out everyday sexism that men don't want to acknowledge or change because the status quo suits them fine, thank you. But carry on with those blinders.

I don't hate feminists. I am not a feminist. I think feminism has been grossly derailed by third wave feminists. If someone doesn't want to be a feminist they have hundreds of legitimate reasons why not that don't include "misogyny."

Um, not really.
Modern femanist actually gotten a surprising amount of stuff done, or at least recognized.
I think you just have your nostalgia goggles on too tight.

Still not a feminist. I'd rather not be associated with radfems, TERFs, and man-haters.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-10 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
I don't either, and I'm a feminist. It's really very easy.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-10 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
Do you know what that does? That allows the conversation to be controlled by the people you disagree with. That allows extremists to take over and be the face of women's rights and women's issues.

Because here's the thing: the people who actively work against feminism and develop movements to counter it aren't just against the groups you mention. They're against women in general, because they associate feminism with women in general, and with every bad thing that's happened in society in the last 40 years. And people like you make it easier for them, because you say, "well, I don't like feminism either!" And they latch the fuck onto that.

The people who want to take away your rights are latching on to the fact that you say you're not a feminist. They're latching on to the fact that you've given up.

You can still speak out against sexism or work for women's rights without identifying as a feminism. You aren't allowing others to take your rights if you don't assiociate with one group that fights against that.

Maybe you shouldn't care so much about the opinions of people who are ignorant of the issue.

Bollocks. Real feminists did the sort of things that made it clear that they were more than capable in settings that were traditionaly regarded as Men Only. Current feminists would rather play the victim and live in a blame game culture. They spit in the face of their grandmothers' achievements.

Did you know that there have been studies done that show there's a cultural bias against women? They took a resume, sent it out to employers, and asked for it to be rated. Sometimes, they sent it out with a woman's name at the top. Sometimes, they sent it out with a man's name at the top. The resume with the woman's name at the top was consistently rated more negatively than the resume with the man's name at the top, despite the fact that it was exactly the same.

"More than capable" still, today, means MORE capable. Getting the same recognition as a man for doing the same work is IMPOSSIBLE. EQUALITY HASN'T ACTUALLY FUCKING HAPPENED, and people like you feed into it. Your grandmother and my grandmother did some shit but they didn't fix the system, and what people like you are doing is saying that those who are still trying to point out the flaws in the system are just playing victim.

THIS IS REALITY: if you were there when our grandmothers were doing this shit, you would telling them they were playing the victim and living in a blame game culture. Because that's how people like you work. You don't want to be uncomfortable, so you buy into the wider cultural paradigm.

I think most reasons people give for not being feminists are bullshit, and even I think you're being absurd

Yes. Thank you. I see it everywhere this topic comes up. Oh, you met/have heard of this one horrible woman who was mean? CLEARLY ALL FEMINISM IS BAD or horrible women wouldn't exist.

So...#notallfeminists?

Facile and facetious.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-10 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
Except that the people who are going #notallmen as a defense are often the very same people complaining about that one mean bitch who wouldn't sleep with them and this is why feminism hurts men, etc. etc.
