I have a ton of OTPs/OT3s and they run the gambit. I like people who honestly care about each other or who could care about each other. I like strong friendships or familial bonds. But I also have OTPs where it's more of a situation where I like the characters first and the OTP comes second -- I like to think how the relationship would then work.

Some examples:
Gil/Greg - CSI - I like May/December pairings. I like that they're both open-minded, and would appreciate having someone who challenges them but they both also have similar outlooks on important issues (like law and order and the importance of their work, etc.). This is one where I think they are better suited for each other than something like Gil/Sara.

Tuor/Voronwe - I like how there's this little bit of destiny where Ulmo saves Voronwe specifically to lead Tuor and help him get to Gondolin. I like how they struggle together to survive the journey and share parts of their lives along the way. BUT, I also like that Tolkien seems to add Voronwe whenever he talks about Tuor later. Like, Voronwe sails off with Tuor and Idril. It hints at something interesting that he's still around and it gets the wheels turning in my head.

John/Dean Winchester - I like incest but only when it starts as adults. I'd like to "fix" their relationship -- to look at "what if's" for if John had been a better father or to figure out how they can salvage what they have. I also get a bit defensive about John's characterization in later seasons when it seems to be so different from how JDM portrayed him. I like Dean's devotion and John's protectiveness for his kids and how much he goes through to protect them. (I have a rather generous reading of his actions.)
