It's the connotation of the word that sets peoples' teeth on edge. Think of a server at a restaurant. They're not there to be your pal or because they like you so much that they're just dying for a chance to bring your food and refill your drinks on command. They're there because it's their job and your position is superior to theirs in the sense that if you complain, they're likely to get in trouble. The customer has more power over the waitstaff.

That's not how it works in my family, so that's why nobody is "serving" anyone.

i get your point, and i agree that in reality power imbalances do exist in those situations. i just don't think that they always exist, or have to exist at all. i do consider myself a servant of my family. if it came down to it, i would do anything for them and it has nothing to do with power, equal or otherwise. there are things that i do for my family members that are purely out of duty, out of loyalty, and thus i consider it service. it's not like i wait on them hand and foot, and i don't think that a loving wife or husband does that for their spouse. you cook dinner for your children, and this is service. it's love and devotion. that's what it means to me.

as i said, it's really an issue of semantics. i realize that when you hear the word 'serve' you're getting a totally different idea from it.

The question is, are you the only or main person in these relationships doing any serving? If so, maybe think why that might be.

no, i'm not.

DA

I would also do anything for the people I love. Anything at all. And I know they'd do the same for me.

None of us would ever call that act "service." You "serve" someone who is in a greater position of power than you. That's the semantics of it. Servitude does not mean an equal relationship in any shape or form.

But service is not synonymous with servitude. Look it up.
