Deep thoughts threat

I keep writing out replies to things, but it all boils down to one question. I'm putting mine in a reply, so others can follow suit if they want.

I don't get why people enjoy fighting

[personal profile] siofrabunnies 2015-01-10 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
I just... don't. Why do people want to have an "us versus them" situation? Why is it so hard to convince people that working together is usually the better solution?

Is it from pre-human days, when everything was about resources and survival - because one person uses more resources than two, so getting rid of the other guy lets you have more? But that's where cooperation came from as well, because two people can carry/collect/defend better than one.

Aren't we possessed of reasoning? In modern-day America, most people do not have to fight for base-level resources like shelter or food. So why do so many people fight so vehemently? Why does it get so violent? Why do people say things like "go kill yourself" for being uninformed about a social issue? Or "I'll rape you" for being of a different skin color, or something?

Is it just competition because our reasoning can't overcome our cornered-animal instincts, i.e. competition for competition's sake?

Is this one of those things I'll never understand, because I'm not like that?

Fight how? Like physically?

Hate physiologically feels good

Having a group to focus your hatred against generally means you have a group you can band together WITH to ensure your survival

And we're evolutionarily primed to do this because it helps to promote loyalty and cooperation within the group and thus survival.

These instincts sadly don't go away -- tribalism is still a thing, it just takes on many varied and complex new forms

Reasoning can override animal instinct, but it can't make it go away. And some people would rather give into those instincts because it feels good.

On a similar note, this is why obesity is such a problem -- because our bodies haven't evolved with a constant, secure food source.

In general, I hate the man - but Richard Dawkins book 'The Selfish Gene' addressss a lot of these questions. Written before he became a frothing-at-the-mouth loony.

I tend to assume most people feel threatened, whether it's a rational feeling or (most cases) not.

For the 'go kill yourself/i'll rape you' crowd, possibly a delusion that they're somehow way more 'powerful' (or an entitlement to being the more 'powerful') and a feeling of threat again? So doubly irrational ;P

*dunno if powerful is the right word, but it's the closest I can think for now

I think most people will find any reason to distract themselves from focusing on what's going on inside of themselves, from focusing on their own health and peace of mind. For a lot of people it's a scary place in there and they don't want to touch it with a ten-foot pole. And there is nothing more distracting than hate and fighting. Not even love.

lol, I was going to say "nice humblebrag"--except it's anything but humble! Oh, your peaceful, accepting, rational, collectivistic, more highly-evolved self just can't understand all these icky, violent, animalistic, competitive people who fight and don't like people who are different from them! If only all the world were just like you, the world would be a better place!

I'd say you're more like ~those people than you'd like to think, given how oblivious you are to how smug and self-satisfied you sound.

It's not so much fighting people enjoy as much as they enjoy being on a team.

With things like jingoism (the us vs. them mentality), the idea goes that being in the right is not only good but also normal, and being "right" should therefore be supported by the idea that different = "wrong".

That's the root of all conflict, put as simply as possible.

People want to be right, and they want to belong to a group. Having an outgroup that they can identify as physically or morally wrong enforces the notion that their ideas are correct and accepted.
