So, I see you've been around the older generations of my family. They speak perfect Spanish and English and thinks it's HILARIOUS when I or my younger relatives attempt to speak Spanish. Because save for a few, none of the older generation bothered teaching the younger generation Spanish. It was just too easy to speak English since we lived in English speaking neighborhoods and had English only speaking friends.

People who actively choose not to teach their children how to do something, and then make fun of the children for not knowing how to do the thing, seriously suck.

and it's a shame your family didn't try to actively teach you Spanish because Spanish is awesome. They should be helping you learn, not mocking you - especially because at this stage in the game, it's going to require a lot of stumbling around and not-perfect practice to make progress on learning the language.
