To ask a sort of alcoholic why they are drinking (for fun or depressed)?

Depends how you ask.

But also, I think, oftentimes someone in that position doesn't need a reason to drink. They're like Edmund Hillary. They drink because it's there.

This person is more of a situational alcoholic. She was only what I would describe as alcoholic when she was really depressed. She eventually stopped drinking as she got mental help. So she still enjoys a drink now and again. But she has been sort of down lately. So I don't know if this is "Just having a drink on the weekend for fun" or "I am going into a spiral of depression and this alcohol will help."

ahhhhh. Yeah I'm not sure how I would approach that tbh. Depends a lot on your relationship.

I would consider her my platonic soul mate. She has told me that I was the reason she is alive today (that one really bad period).

Depends on how close you are. If you could, I'd skip the "why are you drinking" and go straight to the "is anything bothering you/on your mind lately?"
