I don't know, compared to say Narnia, Tolkien didn't use much conservation of detail when it came to the dwarves. He went for a cool number because he wanted to play with the whole "We need another person because thirteen is unlucky!", but most of the thirteen could have easily not been there at all. Narnia? There may have been passing minor characters but they all had a point in the story, and I still consider The Hobbit the better reading.
